Whatif ... ?

Okay, as I was working again on my book today, I came across this from a quote I done in November of 2002. Can you believe it was 20 years ago? So, I have been writing before this and at least this long. This is a great poem by one of my favorite authors, Shel Silverstein. This is from his book, A light In The Attic. A child’s perspective. As we go about our days and nights as adults, we think we have problems? But, whatif I didn’t … ?

Last night, while I lay thinking here,

Some whatifs crawled inside my ear

And pranced and partied all night long

And sang their same old Whatif song:

Whatif I’m dumb in school?

(at work)

Whatif they’ve closed the swimming pool?

(the gym)

Whatif I get beat up?

Whatif there’s poison in my cup?

(or bad coffee)

Whatif I start to cry?

Whatif I get sick and die?

(who will carry on with my quotes)

Whatif I flunk the test?

Whatif green hair grows on my chest?

(or gray and anywhere else)

Whatif nobody likes me?

Whatif a bolt of lightning strikes me?

Whatif I don’t grow taller?

(ha, we only shrink as we get older)

Whatif my head starts getting smaller?

(never that, just an inflated ego sometimes)

Whatif the fish won’t bite?

Whatif the wind tears up my kite?

Whatif they start a war?

(unfortunately a valid question)

Whatif my parents get divorced?

(some of us may wish we were though)

Whatif the bus is late?

(our car doesn’t start)

Whatif my teeth don’t grow straight?

(or hate going to the dentist)

Whatif I tear my pants?

(yeah, that seems the norm now)

Whatif I never learn to dance?

(or didn’t go one night)

Everything seems swell, and then

The nighttime Whatifs strikes again!
